Solution

The correct option is C

4

Finding the possible number of matrices:

Given A be a symmetric matrix of order 2 i.e. A=AT

abbc

Finding A2

A2=abbcabbc=a2+b2ab+bcba+cbb2+c2

Sum of the diagonal isa2+b2+b2+c2=a2+2b2+c2

a2+2b2+c2=1 [given sum of diagonal elements of A2 is 1]

a2+c2=1sincethecoefficientofb=2,itmakesvalueofA2morethan1,henceb=0

Since the coefficient of b=2, it makes value of more than 1, hence b=0

a=0andc=±1orc=0anda=±1

The possibilities are

a=0,b=0,c=1a=0,b=0,c=-1a=1,b=0,c=0a=-1,b=0,c=0

Hence, the possible number of such matrices is 4.

Hence, option (C) is the correct answer
