Let I be the moment of inertia of the square plate about an axis perpendicular to the plane of plate and passing through its center, that is, point P.
From perpendicular axis theorem,
I1+I1=I
where the two I1 represent the moments of inertia about the two diagonals of the square.
I1=I2
Similarly again from perpendicular axis theorem,
I2=I2
Thus I1=I2
