Question

Let S1 and S2 be the two slits in a Young's double slit experiment. If central maxima is observed at P and S1PS2=θ (θ is small), find the ycoordinate of the third minima assuming the origin to be at the central maxima, λ is the wavelength of light used.

Solution

The correct option is B ±5λ2θ

As angle θ is small, we can write,
θ=dD

Let third minima is formed at point Q, at angular position θ , as shown in the diagram.
Considering both the third minima, formed on both sides of point P, the y coordinate of point of third minima is,
y=±5β2=±5λD2d
=±5λ2θ ( θ=dD)

Hence, (B) is the correct answer.
