Question

Let us consider a metal with work function 4.64 eV. If this metal is irradiated with photons having energy 10.42×1019 J then the wavelength associated with an ejected electron is x×109 m. What is the nearest interger value of x?

Solution

The work function of the metal
=hνo=4.64×1.6×1019 J=7.42×1019 J
Again we know ,
hν=hνo+KE
or KE=hνhνo
KE=10.42×1019 J7.42×1019 J=3×1019 J

From the de-Broglie equation,
λ=hmv
m=9.1×1031 kg (electron)
=h2m(KE)=6.62×10342×9.1×1031×3.0×1019
=8.96×109 m
Thus, x=9
