  • In 1951, Libya was freed from the colonial rule of Italy, and power was transferred to King Idris.​
  • In 1959, oil reserves were found in Libya, and money started pouring into the country. King and powerful families started gathering wealth. People wanted the wealth to be distributed equally and establish a modern state.​
  • In 1969, Muammar Gaddafi along with 70 army officers took over Libya. They got support from the military and aimed to develop Libya into a modern country.​
  • The RCC was intolerant of criticism and opposition. They arrested, tortured, and killed political opponents. There was no freedom of expression, and the formation of unions was not allowed.​
  • In 2010, there were movements across the Arab to establish a democratic government.​
  • As the protests turned violent, powerful countries like the US, France, and Britain supported Libya and wanted to end Gaddafi’s rule.​
  • A new government was formed on 14 November 2012.​
