Question

Light of wavelength λph falls on a cathode plate inside a vacuum tube as shown in the figure. The work function of the cathode surface is ϕ and the anode is a wire mesh of conducting material kept at a distance 'd' from the cathode. A potential difference V is maintained between the electrodes. If the minimum de Broglie wavelength of the electrons passing through the anode is λe, which of the following statement(s) is(are) true?

A
λe increases at the same rate as λph for λe<hc/ϕ

Solution

The correct option is D For large potential difference (V>>ϕ/e)λe is approximately halved if V is made four time
Electrons entering the cathode having minimum de broglie wavelength λe.
So kinetic energy of those elctrons will be maximum

K.Emax=hcλphϕ.

Kinetic energy of electrons entering from anode is K.Eanode=hcλphϕ + eV=p22me=h22meλ2e
K.Eanode=hcλphϕ + eV=h22meλ2e

diffrentiating both the sides,
hcλ2ph×dλph = 2h22meλ3e ×dλe
dλph=(hmec×λ2phλ3e).dλe
Here we can say that option A is wrong,
and λe does not depends on the distance 'd' which is distance between anode and cathode as long as potential diffrence is same, hence option B is wrong.

Here if we increase ϕ and λph the kinetic energy will reduce as
K.Eanode=hcλphϕ
and λe will increase, so the option C is also incorrect.

V>>ϕe

Energy of electron,

eVh22meλ2e

This supports option D.
