Static friction comes into play when an object at rest is to be put in motion, whereas, sliding friction comes into play when a moving object is to be kept moving with the same speed. When an object is at rest, the points of contact are tightly interlocked with each other and more is the friction. However, when one object is sliding over the other, the points of contact do not get enough time to interlock with each other, thus it is easier to keep the object in motion as the friction is less.

Thus, limiting value of static friction, i.e., the value of friction when the body is just about to move, is more than sliding friction.
