We plot the year number on the horizontal axis and the number of houses built on the vertical axis.
Here, each data point is shown by a yellow dot.

Now connect the dots with straight lines.
The following graph is obtained.
The line connecting dots corresponding to 2014 and 2015 is a slanting line, whereas the line between 2015 and 2016 is horizontal.

A vertical line is not possible as only one frequency is mapped to a particular year.
