3x = x - 1


When we add or subtract the same number on both sides of a linear equation, the balance of the equation remains undisturbed.
So, on adding 5 to 3x = x - 1,we get,

3x + 5 = x - 1 + 5

3x + 5 = x + 4

3x = x + 4 - 5

3x = x – 1
