The space around the magnet in which the magnetic force of a magnet is experienced by magnetic materials is called the magnetic field.
A magnetic field can be assumed to be made up of infinite lines which originate from the north pole and end at the south pole and these lines are called “magnetic field lines”.
Closer the magnetic field lines, the stronger the magnetism and vice versa.
At the poles, the magnetic field lines are very closely spaced, and hence the intensity of magnetism is maximum at the poles.
Near the centre of the magnet, the magnetic field lines are very far from each other and hence magnetism is minimum near the centre of a magnet.
