Question

Liquids A and B form ideal solution over the entire range of composition. At temperature T, equimolar binary solution of liquids A and B has vapour pressure 45 torr. At the same temperature, a new solution of A and B having mole fractions xA and xB, respectively, has vapour pressure of 22.5 torr. The value of xAxB in the new solution is .
(Given that the vapour pressure of pure liquid A is 20 Torr at temperature T)

Solution

By using the formula,
ptotal=poA×xA+poBxB
and for equimolar solutions
xA=xB=12
Given,
ptotal=45 torr for equimolar solution
poA=20 torr
45=poA×12+poB12=12(poA+poB)
RightarrowpoA+poB=90 torr
But we know,
poA=20 torr
Now, for the new solution from the same formula.
Given,
ptotal=22.5 torr
So, 22.5=20xA+70(1xA)
(As xA+xB=1)
22.5=7050xA
xA=7022.550=0.95
Thus,
xB=10.95=0.05
Hence, the ratio xAxB=0.950.05=19
