Question

Liquids generally have a lower density when compared to solids, but ice floats on water. State the reason.

Solution

  • Water has strong hydrogen bonding between molecules in its liquid form.
  • When water freezes into ice, the hydrogen bonds that form allow the molecules to be spaced further apart by locking them into fixed positions, hence making them take more space.
  • That is why overall density decreases and making ice float on the water.
