At around 14th day of menstrual cycle in human females egg is released from mature graafian follicle under the influence of luteinizing hormone. This event is called as ovulation. The fertilisation of egg by sperm to give rise to a zygote is called as conception.

Fertilisation occurs in fallopian tubes, conception leads to pregnancy. Conception is followed by implantation, i.e., attachment of fertilized egg or zygote to the wall of uterus. The time period between pregnancy and childbirth is called as gestation period. In humans gestation period duration is roughly 38 weeks. During gestation period, the embryo develops from zygote. At the end of gestation period is parturition event during which child is delivered from uterus. Parturition is a complex process involving interplay of nervous and endocrine systems.
