Characteristics of class Amphibia:

  1. These animals differ from the fish in the lack of scales, in having mucus glands in the skin, and a three-chambered heart.
  2. They live in freshwater.
  3. They are found both in water and on land.
  4. They have smooth skin and are covered with mucus.
  5. The body is divisible into a well-developed head and trunk.
  6. The trunk possesses two pairs of limbs and digits without claws.
  7. Respiration is through either gills or lungs.
  8. Immovable or movable eyelids are present.
  9. A nictitating membrane like a third eye, a waterproof covering is present which helps when the animal is in water.
  10. The tympanum represents the ear.
  11. Examples: frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians
