Arthropoda is one of the largest phyla and consists of around 9 lakh species. Organisms belonging to this phylum may be terrestrial, aquatic or free living.

Characteristics of Arthropoda:

Arthropods are invertebrate animals having the following characteristics -

  1. Arthropods have an exoskeleton made up of chitin.
  2. Arthropods have jointed appendages that may be wings, antennae, legs or mouthparts.
  3. Their body is segmented.
  4. Arthropods have a body segmented into head, thorax and abdomen.
  5. They are bilaterally symmetrical.
  6. Examples - Butterfly, ants, limulus, etc.
