List any three points of differences between true solution, colloidal solution and suspension
We can classify substances into true solution, collloidal solution and suspension depending upon the properties
True solution | Colloidal solution | Suspension |
Solute dissolves in a solvent and give rise to true solution and solute particles have size range less than 1 nm size | Colloidal particles have size in between 1-1000 nm size | Particles are suspended in a medium which are large enough to see with the naked eye since particles are having size greater than 1000 nm |
Particles are too small to see with the naked eye and do not settle down when left undisturbed | When colloidal solution left undisturbed, particles do not settle down | When suspension left undisturbed, particles settle down |
We can not separate the dissolved components by physical methods like ordinary filters | We can not separate the colloidal particles with ordinary filter but ultrafiltration can be employed using specially designed filters | We can separate the suspended particles using ordinary filters since the particles are large, that not allow to pass through the filters |
Example: Sugar solution | Example: Milk | Example: Sand in water |
