Forest:

  1. A forest is a large area of land covered with herbs, shrubs, trees, and grasses.
  2. The trees create a special environment which in turn affects the kinds of animals and plants that can exist in the forest.
  3. Humans began their life on the earth as forest dwellers.

Functions of the forest:

  1. Timber/Fuelwood: Forests are an important source of energy for fuelwood used for cooking and heating, especially in rural areas.
  2. Bamboo: The bamboo trees are common in the north-eastern and the south-western parts of India. Bamboo is used as timber substitutes, fodder, and raw material for making baskets, paper, and pulp.
