It is the process of collecting and disposing of solid waste, which includes domestic garbage, agricultural waste, medical waste, sewage, and other plastic and metal waste. Waste is collected and transported to different plants for waste disposal treatment and recycled thereafter.
The different modes of solid waste disposal are-
Land Fills- The waste which cannot be reused or recycled is dumped in an open pit and is covered with layers of soil. In this way, the pit is filled up with solid waste and the land is declared unfit for cultivation or construction for a few years. The land could be used as a park.
Generation of biogas- Biodegradable waste such as animal waste, vegetable peels, industrial waste, and food items are sent to bio-degradation plants. With the help of bacteria and other microbes, they are converted into biogas. Later, the biogas generated is used as a fuel and the residue left is used as a manure.
Vermicomposting- Vermicomposting is a traditional way of composting using worms. The organic is given to worms as a food source, the worms consume the organic matter, and excreta given out by the worms is added to the soil which serves as nutrient-rich manure.
Incineration- It is the process of treating waste through the process of combustion. It is also known as Thermal Treatment. The process generates a lot of heat and is considered non-environment friendly as it gives out carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the air.
