Hemichordates were earlier placed in a subphylum under the phylum chordata, but now they have been elevated to the level of phylum. Phylum Hemichordata has the following characteristic features:

1. Organ system level of organisation, and are triplobastic.
2. Bilaterally symmetrical,, coelomate animals.
3. Circulatory system is of open type, respiration occurs through gills.
4. They have separate sexes, show external fertilisation and development is indirect i.e. involves intermediate larval stages.
