Chordata is the animal phylum which includes humans and other vertebrates. However, not all chordates are vertebrates. Characteristics of Chordates:
They are bilaterally symmetrical.
They are triploblastic
They are coelomate.
They have paired gill pouches.
Pharyngeal slits are present- a series of openings that connect the inside of the throat to the outside of the neck.
Dorsal nerve cord is a prominent feature - a bundle of nerve fibres which runs down the back. It connects the brain with the lateral muscles and other organs.
Notochord is present - cartilaginous rod running underneath, and supporting, the nerve cord.
Post-anal tail is a characteristic feature - an extension of the body past the anal opening.
