1. Bimetallic strip works on the basis of thermal expansion. Here, the two metals having different coefficients of thermal expansion expand differently. For example, brass expands much more than iron. These are used in fire alarms, electric iron, electric oven, etc.
2. Thermal expansion property of mercury is used in thermometers. When the temperature rises, mercury undergoes expansion.
3. Thermal expansion of gases is utilized in hot air balloons. In hot air balloons, when the gas is burnt it expands and causes the hot air balloon to move upwards.
