Characteristics of bryophytes:

(i) The plant body is differentiated to form a stem and leaf-like structures. They are considered as first true plants.
(ii) These are called amphibians of the plants since they live in soil and water both.
(iii) There is no specialized tissue for the conduction of water and other substances from one part of the plant body to another (no vascular system).
(iv) An embryo is formed upon fertilization.
(v) Water is necessary for fertilization.
