Open in App
Solution

Class Rhodophyceae:

  1. Due to the presence of the water-soluble red pigment r-phycoerythrin, they are frequently referred to as red algae.
  2. However, the r-phycoerythrin is enough and present to entirely obscure the chlorophyll a, creating the characteristic red colour.
  3. Over 98 percent of the members are marine, with the remaining members growing in freshwater.
  4. Compared to other members of other classes, marine animals can survive at greater depths (even at 30-90 meters).
  5. Some members belonging to class Rhodophyceae are Porphyra, Gelidium, Polysiphonia, etc.
