Cork is the external protective tissue seen in older stems and roots.

Characteristics of cork are

  1. Cork is made up of dead cells with the deposition of tannins and resins.
  2. Tightly packed tissues without intercellular space.
  3. Multilayered cells with suberin deposition which makes them impermeable to water.

Cork is formed from cork cambium or phellogen or secondary lateral meristem.

Functions

  1. Exchange of gases via lenticels.
  2. Protection from mechanical injury
  3. Protection from pathogens
  4. Prevent water loss due to evaporation
  5. Has commercial importance.
