Solution

Substances can be called a mixture, if it contains different components that are not chemically linked.

Homogeneous mixtures

  • Mixtures containing components which are in the same phase, i.e.., appear to be a single substance, but contain different substances which are not chemically linked.
  • Example: air. alloys.
  • Alloy is a homogeneous mixture, which is a combination of two or more metals or one metal and non-metal, that showcases increased strength and durability.
  • Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon (2%).

Heterogeneous mixtures

  • Mixtures have components which are in different phases, i.e.., we can visually distinguish the presence of components in them.
  • Example: a mixture of sugar and sand.
  • We can easily distinguish the presence of sugar sand because they remain physically separate.
