Placenta:

  1. It is the temporary organ which attaches to the uterus of the mother during pregnancy found in mammals.
  2. It also helps in the exchange of nutrients and gases between mother and foetus.

Hormones secreted by placenta:

  1. Hormones produced by the placenta are estrogen, progesterone, human chorionic gonadotropin, placental lactogen and relaxin.
  2. During parturition growth of myometrium is stimulated by estrogen.
  3. Pregnancy is maintained by progesterone.
  4. The growth of the corpus luteum is maintained by human chorionic gonadotropin.
  5. Placental lactogen help in the development of the breast.
  6. Relaxin relaxes the pelvic ligaments to help in process of delivery.
