Proteins, lipids and carbohydrates are the major biomolecules which make up the cell. Proteins have various functions, such as, structural function (serving as the membrane exoskeleton together with lipids), transport function (they help to transport elements from one side of the membrane to the other) and signalling function (depending on which proteins the cell has in its membrane it is perceived differently by other cells and microorganisms). Lipid function as storing energy, signalling and acting as structural components of cell membranes. The role of carbohydrates is to provide energy, as they are the body's main source of fuel, needed for physical activity, brain function and operation of the organs. All the cells and tissues in the body need carbohydrates and they are also important for intestinal health and waste elimination.
