Blood

Blood is a mobile, watery fluid that flows through the blood vessels. It is red color due to the presence of a pigment called hemoglobin. Blood is composed of 55% plasma and 45% blood cells (RBC, WBC & platelets).

Functions of blood

  1. Blood helps in the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and the transport of carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs.
  2. Blood transports the nutrients absorbed after digestion to all parts of the body.
  3. It helps in the maintenance of a constant body temperature in our body.
  4. Waste products formed in the body are carried by the blood to the kidneys for their removal.
  5. It helps in the regulation of the pH of body fluids as it contains plasma protein which acts as a buffer.
