Alimentary canal:
This is the canal that is involved in the digestion, i.e. breakdown of the complex food and is composed of various organs.
It begins from the buccal cavity followed by oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and ends at the rectum and anus.
Buccal cavity: It is an oral cavity where the ingestion of food happens. The food is chewed and mixed with saliva forming a bolus. The saliva having the salivary amylase acts upon the starch and forms maltose and dextrin.
Oesophagus: It is a long pipe that connects the buccal cavity to the stomach and the rest of the alimentary canal. The bolus formed in buccal cavity passes through the oesophagus by peristalsis and reaches the stomach.
Stomach: It is a J-shaped pouch which receives the bolus and the stomach releases HCl which activates the pepsin enzyme in the stomach and breaks down the proteins. Here, the food is mixed with water and chyme is formed.
Small intestine: It is a highly coiled organ with three distinct regions named duodenum, jejunum and ileum respectively and is lined with micro finger-like structures on the inner side. The chyme moves into the small intestine for the final stage of digestion.
Large intestine: It is a much wider tubular structure with three parts ending at the anus. This is where the water and minerals are absorbed and the undigested food passes through this.
Anus: After complete digestion and absorption the remains that do not get digested are released by the anus.
