Railway is the second most important mode of transport after roadways​. It allows economical travel to distant places and transportation of goods​. The state's first railway line between Bengaluru and Madras opened in 1864.

There are two important railways – Konkan Railways and Metro Rail.​

• Konkan Railways links Mangaluru and Mumbai and has reduced the travel time from 41 hours to 18 hours.​
• Metro Rail: Bengaluru is a metropolitan city. The first Metro rail between Appanahalli and M.G.Road was launched on 20th October 2011 to overcome transportation problems​.
