Nerve cells or neurons are the structural and functional units of the nervous system.
On the basis of the function, the nerves are divided into three parts, such as sensory nerves, motor nerves and mixed nerves.
Sensory nerves: The nerves which transmit impulses from the central nervous system to the effector organs are known as sensory nerves. These nerves are made up of sensory neurons.
Motor nerves: The nerves which transmit impulses from the receptor organs to the central nervous system are known as motor nerves. These nerves are made up of motor neurons.
Mixed nerves: They are made up of two types of nerve fibres, sensory and motor, hence they perform two types of functions.
