Solution

The two main causes of the pollution of river Ganga are:
a) The release of industrial waste into it.
b) Cremation of the corpse on the river side and release of their ashes into it.
The pollutants released into the water bodies is a major threat because the people living in neighboring areas use the river water for drinking and domestic purposes, this can cause severe health problems such as water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid and skin infections.
