Question

List various fields where cryogenics can be used. Also, explain in brief how it finds its application.

Open in App
Solution

Cryogenics is widely used in the following fields:

1. Rocket: The most common application of cryogenics is cryogenic fuels. Liquid hydrogen is the most widely used rocket fuel. Liquid oxygen (LOX) is even more widely used but as an oxidizer, not as a fuel.

2. Power Transmission: In big cities, where power is transmitted through underground cables, overheating of cables is a major concern as it causes undesired power loss. Liquefied gases are sprayed on the cables to keep them cool and reduce their resistance, hence reducing power loss.

3. Food Freezing: Cryogenic gases are used in the transportation of large masses of frozen food. When very large quantities of food must be transported to regions like war zones, the earthquake hit regions etc, they must be stored for a long time, so cryogenic food freezing is used. Cryogenic food freezing is also helpful for large scale food processing industries.

4. Biotechnology: The freezing of biotechnology products, like vaccines, requires nitrogen in blast freezing or immersion freezing systems.

5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging: MRI is used to image the anatomy of the body using magnetic fields. This magnetic field is generated by superconducting coils with the help of liquid helium. Liquid helium can reduce the temperature of the coil to 4 K. At this low temperature, very high-resolution images can be obtained.
