List various types of isomerism possible for coordination compounds, giving an example of each.

Open in App
Solution

Isomerism in coordination compounds is mainly of two types:
1.Structural isomerism2.Stereo isomerism (a)Linkage isomerism (a)Geometrical isomerism (b)Coordination isomerism(b)Optical isomerism (c)Ionization isomerism (d)Solvate isomerism
Examples:
1. (a) Linkage isomerism:
(i) [Co(NH3)5NO2]Cl2 and [Co(NH3)5ONO]Cl2
(ii) [Mn(CO)5SCN] and [Mn(CO)5NCS]
(b) Coordination isomerism:
(I) [Co(NH3)6][Cr(CN)6] and [Cr(NH3)6][Co(CN)6]
(c) Ionization isomerism:
(i) [Co(NH3)5SO4] Br and [Co(NH3)5Br]SO4
(d) Solvate isomerism:
(i) [Cr(H2O)6]Cl3 (violet) and [Cr(H2O)5Cl]Cl2 H2O (greygreen)

2.(a) Geometrical isomerism:
(i) Cis - and trans-isomers of [CoCl2(en)2]

(b) Optical isomerism
(i) dextro- and laevo-rotatory forms of [Co(en)3]3+
