Li floats on water but without any reaction with it.
Lithium has a very low density of 0.534 g/cm3,
comparable with that of pine wood. It is the least dense of all elements that
are solids at room temperature.
Lithium's density is only about half that of
water, so it floats on the surface, fizzing and giving off hydrogen gas. It
gradually reacts and disappears, forming a colorless solution of lithium
hydroxide and highly flammable hydrogen. The colourless
solution is highly alkalic.
