Phloem:

  1. Phloem is the complex conducting tissue formed from more than one type of cell.
  2. They are present in all parts of a plant like a stem, roots and leaves.
  3. The main function of phloem is to transport the food prepared by leaves to different parts of a plant.
  4. Phloem is composed of four types of cells:
    • Sieve tubes
    • Companion cells- Thin elongated living cells associated with sieve tubes.
    • Phloem parenchyma- Small living cells associated with sieve tubes.
    • Phloem fibres- Thick-walled, fibre-like dead cells that give strength to a plant.
  5. Sieve tubes: These are the main cells which are formed by elongated living cells with porous end plates. They have cytoplasm but no nucleus at maturity.
