The correct option is D SCID, Functional ADA deficiency
SCID is often called the ‘bubble boy disease’. It drew its nickname as Bubble boy disease from the protective plastic tubes that were once used to cocoon infants with this condition.
A mutation in the gene coding for the enzyme adenosine deaminase (ADA) can cause SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). ADA (Adenosine deaminase) is involved in purine metabolism. When DNA is broken down, it generates a molecule known as deoxyadenosine which is toxic to lymphocytes. The enzyme ADA is crucial for the immune system to function as it is involved in the conversion of deoxyadenosine to a non-toxic molecule called deoxyinosine. The patients with ADA deficiency, as a result, would have non-functional lymphocytes and so they cannot mount immune responses against invading pathogens. The human immune system constantly patrols, protects and defends the body from all types of enemies (bacteria, virus etc.). Children with SCID lack the ability to produce an immune response.
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It damages the immune system. HIV interferes with the body's ability to fight infection and disease. HIV specifically targets CD4 cells (T Helper cells), the body's principal defenders against infection, using them to make copies of themselves.
Decline in insulin production in our body leads to an increase in the blood glucose level, the disease known as diabetes mellitus.
