Zamindari System was introduced by Cornwallis in 1793 through Permanent Settlement Act in provinces of Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Varanasi. Zamindars were recognized as owner of the lands. Farmers needed to pay a fixed sum in cash or kind to the Zamindars. This settlement took away the administrative and judicial functions of the zamindars.
