Loss of ____ is called reduction (oxygen/ electron)

Open in App
Solution

1. Reduction

Either the loss of oxygen or the addition of hydrogen in a reaction is called reduction. In reduction, the element or the molecule gains one or more electrons.

2. Example of reduction:

In the reaction of Copper oxide with hydrogen, copper undergoes reduction and forms water.

CuOs+H2gCus+H2OlCopperoxideHydrogenCopperWater

In the above reaction, oxygen is lost from copper.

Hence, the loss of oxygen is called reduction.
