In 1971, the Man & Biosphere (MAB) programme was initiated by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This intergovernmental scientific MAB programme aimed to improve the relationship between man and the environment.
A programme called the Biosphere Reserve was also initiated under the MAB.
Biosphere Reserves are defined as the internationally recognized areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems that promote solutions to facilitate the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use.
