Question

Magnitude of surface charge density on each plate of a parallel plate capacitor is 150ε0 μC/m2. What is the magnitude of the electric field in the region between the plates?
(Take εo=8.85×1012 C2/N m2)

Solution

Given:
surface charge density, σ=150ε0 μC/m2

The electric field due to each plate has the same magnitude and direction.

E+=E=σ2ϵ0 [towards right]

Enet=E++E

Enet=σ2ϵ0+σ2ϵ0=σϵ0

Enet=150×8.85×1068.85×1012=150 N/C

Key Concept : Magnitude of electric field due to each plate is σ2ϵ0 and it's directed along the same direction, which is from positive plate towards negative plate.
