Cytochrome mainly cytochrome c (Cyt c) is involved in the transfer of electrons. It is an iron associated protein present on the inner membrane of the mitochondria. It highly assists in electron transport chain since it is capable of undergoing oxidation and reduction by switching the iron centres from ferrous to ferric and vice versa but does not bind with oxygen. It transfers electrons between Complexes III (Coenzyme Q – Cyt C reductase) and IV (Cyt C oxidase).
