Tungabhadra is a tributary of the Krishna river system. The Tungabhadra river basin is facing some challenges in water resources.
Following are the challenges prevailing in Tungabhadra Basin:
- Encroachment of public lands for cultivation results in forest degradation which affect the inflows of groundwater.
- The major crops grown include paddy and sugarcane, which are water-intensive crops. They are causing a serious problem to water availability in that region.
- Industrialisation in the Tungabhadra basin has contributed a lot to the pollution of water reservoirs.
- The Exploitation of mineral reserves from the basin area leads to soil erosion and siltation of a small reservoir, causing Tungabhadra to lose its water holding capacity.
- Conflicts between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh regarding the water use of Tungabhadra have created chaos and unrest among the farmers and the governing bodies.
Some solutions to meet the above challenges:
- Afforestation should be promoted to increase forest cover in the Tungabhadra basin.
