∙ In mammals, four types of teeth - incisors, canines, molars and premolars are present, so they have heterodont dentition.
∙ When different types of teeth are developed to suit their varying feeding habits then this is called heterodont dentition.
∙ Incisors- These are the front teeth that are used for biting and cutting the food.
∙ Canines- These are the corner teeth that are used for gripping and tearing the food.
∙ Premolars- These have flat surfaces and these are used for tearing and crushing.
∙ Molars- These are large and are used for chewing the food.
