Manganese (IV) oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula $Mn{O}_2$. This blackish or brown solid occurs naturally as the mineral pyrolusite, Manganese oxide can react with $HCl$ and release $C{l}_2$ gas forming $MnC{l}_2$ and water. $Mn{O}_2+4HCl\to MnC{l}_2+C{l}_2+2H_{2}O$ The reaction of hydrogen chloride with $Mn{O}_2$ was used by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in the original isolation of chlorine gas.
