Solution

The correct option is B 43Gm2

Let F1, F2, F4, F8.... be the forces of gravitation due to masses m at x=1, 2, 4, 8.... respectively.

F1=Gm212

Similarly,

F2=Gm222; F4=Gm242; F8=Gm282

So, net force Fnet acting on mass m at origin is given as

Fnet=F1+F2+F4+F8...=Gm2(11+14+116+164...)

This is infinite G.P. with common ratio, r=14 and first term, a=1

For an infinite G.P,
sum=(a1r)

Sum=1114=43

So,
Fnet=F1+F2+F4+F8....=43Gm2

Hence, option (b) is correct.
Key Concept: Principle of Superposition - The gravitational force between two masses is independent of other masses in the vicinity and the net force on a mass is equal to the vector sum of forces by all the masses.
