Continuous self-pollination results in poor plant quality. Hence many of the flowering plants have developed devices for discouraging breeding. These are called outbreeding devices. These devices are-

1. Unisexuality of plant- The plant bears either male or female flowers and never both.

2. Dichogamy- In this the stamens and pistils of a flower mature at different times to prevent self-fertilization.
