Solution

Ratio of cocoa to refined flour for:
(i) Maria = 3:4 =34

(ii) Polly = 2:3 = 23

(iii) Mary = 12:16 = 1216

Consider 34 and 23.
3 × 3 = 9
4 × 2 = 8
Here, 9 is not equal to 8.
So, 34 and 23 are not equivalent.

Consider 1216 and 23.
12 × 3 = 36
16 × 2 = 32
Here, 36 is not equal to 32.
So, 1216 and 23 are not equivalent.

Consider34 and 1216.
3 × 16 = 48
4 × 12 = 48
Here, the products are equal.
Therefore, 3:4 is equivalent to 12:16.
Maria and Mary have baked their cakes in the same ratio.
