Let x be the maximum marks.
Pass marks = (145 + 35) = 180
∴ 36% of x = 180
⇒ $\left(\frac{36}{100}\times x\right)=180$
⇒ x = $\left(\frac{180\times 100}{36}\right)=\left(5\times 100\right)=500$
Hence, maximum marks = 500
