$Let the number be x . As, \frac{2}{3} of the number is less than the original number by 20 . \Rightarrow x - \frac{2}{3} x = 20 \Rightarrow \frac{x}{1} - \frac{2 x}{3} = 20 \Rightarrow \frac{3 x}{3} - \frac{2 x}{3} = 20 \Rightarrow \frac{3 x - 2 x}{3} = 20 \Rightarrow \frac{x}{3} = 20 \Rightarrow x = 20 \times 3 (By transposing 3 to RHS) ∴ x = 60$

So, the number is 60.

Hence, the correct alternative is option (d).
